A car park can look well covered on a site plan and still leave the incidents that matter unrecorded. Vehicles move quickly, people enter from several directions, lighting changes after dark, and a camera aimed too broadly may identify neither a face nor a number plate. The best surveillance for car parks is not simply the system with the most cameras. It is a designed solution that matches the layout, risk level and response plan for the site.

For a retail centre, office complex, school, construction site or residential development, the objective is usually the same: deter unwanted behaviour, give authorised users confidence and provide usable evidence if an incident occurs. Achieving that requires more than mounting cameras at the perimeter.

Why car park surveillance needs a site-specific design

Car parks create blind spots by nature. Rows of vehicles block sightlines, pedestrian paths may run behind buildings, and access points are often shared by cars, delivery drivers, contractors and visitors. A camera that produces a clear image during the day may struggle with headlights, shadows or low light at night.

The starting point should be a site assessment rather than a product list. A security specialist should consider where vehicles enter and leave, where pedestrians cross, which bays are isolated, where valuables are stored, and where previous theft, vandalism or unauthorised access has occurred. The operating hours matter too. A busy commercial car park during business hours needs a different approach from a mostly empty site exposed overnight.

Risk should guide the level of coverage. It may be sufficient to record general activity across a low-risk visitor car park, while a fleet yard, dealership, logistics facility or construction compound may need reliable identification at gates, pedestrian access points and asset storage areas. Remote viewing allows site managers or authorised personnel to check the site without travelling there.

The right camera selection depends on the task. Wide-angle cameras can supervise broad areas, while varifocal cameras allow a more precise field of view at gates and restricted zones. Low-light capability, infrared performance and weather-rated housings are particularly relevant for outdoor installations. Signage should advise people that surveillance is in operation, and access to footage should be limited to authorised staff.

Good system administration is equally important. Use individual user access where possible, protect remote viewing with strong credentials and remove access when staff or contractors leave.
