Most security issues follow predictable paths. People use driveways, gates, front doors, loading zones, side access paths and internal corridors. Vehicles enter through the same points. A camera that works well during the day can perform poorly after dark if placement has not accounted for lighting. Backlighting is one of the biggest issues. Infrared cameras also need clear planning. If the camera is mounted too close to a wall, under an eave with reflective surfaces, or behind dirty plastic or glass, the IR can bounce back and create a hazy image. For exposed sites, supplementary lighting can improve results, but it should be positioned to support the camera rather than blind it. Indoor placement needs a different mindset
Inside a building, camera placement should support operations as well as security. Entrances, reception areas, corridors, stock access points and restricted rooms are usually more useful than trying to monitor every office or every shelf. The aim is to cover movement between zones and any point where loss, conflict or unauthorised access is likely to occur.
Privacy and compliance also matter indoors. Cameras should not be installed in places where people reasonably expect privacy. In warehouses and industrial spaces, mounting height can be greater, but so can the challenge of lighting, dust and obstructions.
